Captain Volkonogov Escaped
CVE is harsh and uncompromising exploration of the soul-crushing effect of totalitarian state. Story takes place in semi-fictional Stalinist Russia. Young NKVD captain, once brute and eager enforcer of the repressive apparatus, gets revelation about the eternal condemnation waiting him in afterlife. Manhunted by his former colleagues and despised by former victims, the protagonist then goes through the doom-destined journey to find redemption.
Graphic design for the movie takes inspiration from Soviet constructivism. Films end credits design re-creates the protagonist’s amok route: down the stairways, up the ladders, through the courtyards, past the railway stations, a futile flight, route doomed from the beginning to the end.
